City of Sunnyvale Government Salary Facts

What the official salary data shows:
  • The current City Manager made almost $315,000 in 2011 ($256,192 in salary plus $58,787 in benefits). That’s 35% more than what the same position paid in 2003. For comparison, the Bay Area Consumer Price Index increased only about 19% over the same time.
  • The median compensation (salary, overtime, and benefits) of full-time Sunnyvale City employees is now over $100,000, that’s 25% more than in 2003.
  • Although the number of full-time employees in the City has been reduced from 1082 in 2003 to 894 in 2011 (a 17% decrease), total employee compensation has increased by 10% from $93 million in 2003 to $102 million in 2011. This is an increase of one million dollars per year.
  • In just the eight years from 2003 to 2011, the median Public Safety Officer's compensation has increased over 30% from $135,000 to over $181,000 per year.
  • Our City Council now costs us over a quarter of a million dollars per year (including the approximately $50,000 in travel allowances).
  • In 2011, 452 Sunnyvale City employees made over $100,000 per year in salary and benefits and 68 made over $200,000.
